US Senator Writes to Ambassador Bremer on Freedom of Religion

and Iraqi Chaldeans' Rights

 

24 January, 2004 Washington, DC  Due to the lobbying efforts of Mr. Joseph Kassab of Chaldean National Congress, Michigan Branch with members of US Commission on International Freedom of Religion, a letter by US Senator Honorable Rick Santorum, Chairman of the powerful Senate Republican Conference was sent to Ambassador Paul Bremer, Coalition Provisional Administrator of Iraq. The letter highlighted Senator Santorum's grave concerns, shared by many Iraqis, of the danger of adopting a new Iraqi constitution influenced by Iraqi Islamists. A constitution that will clearly continue centuries old discrimination against Iraqi Chaldeans and Christians. Iraqi Islamists' are already leading a vicious campaign of intimidation, threats and outright murders against all those Iraqis who do not fit their narrow vision of the world. Islamic extremists have already murdered tens of Iraqi Chaldeans and burned or bombed their shops, simply because others do not follow their twisted values and interpretation of Islam. Those murderous acts have resulted in an ethnic cleansing of Iraqi Chaldean Christians from the south of Iraq where majority of Shias live. All to the dubious silence of Iraqi Shia religious figures.
